Wednesday into Thursday

Our teams mostly arrived in Atlanta during the morning or early afternoon on Wednesday, April 20th.  We were all booked to stay at the Days Inn Downtown, and made rendezvous there for our evening dinner excursion.  The pool was a popular spot, until we started off for our reservation at Mary Mac's Tea Room, an long-time Atlanta institution (established 1945).  We wanted to experience some traditional Southern cooking, and enjoyed our excellent family-style all-you-can-eat meal immensely!  The service was excellent, the people very friendly, and we certainly couldn't leave hungry!

Thursday morning saw us walking to the Georgia World Congress Center (next to the Georgia Dome), where the pit areas for the FRC, FVC and FLL competitions were all located.  We got our packets and passed in our Engineering notebooks first thing.  Each team had a 10 x 10 foot pit, set up with trade show side and back curtains, with power (eventually) and a table.  A practice field was available next to the pits, but it was close to a 10 minute walk to the playing fields in the Georgia Dome, and getting to the stands from the fields (and vice versa) was difficult.  Practice ran from 8:30 to 10:00am.  We were careful about providing eye protection to our entire team and entourage.

During the practice time, most of our team members spent some time of the Radio Shack Vex Challenge fields, earning some prizes and having some fun.  Their experience would stand them in good stead on Friday evening.

The FIRST Vex Challenge opening ceremony was at 10:15am, with five qualification rounds throughout the rest of the day on the two DaVinci Vex fields in the Georgia dome.  Our rounds started inauspiciously, but we did OK for the day.  Our FVC team 13 had no partner for the first round, and our FVC team 44 had no receiver crystal when up against a single team.  The rest of our day ran more smoothly.
