Sharon Eagles Robotics combined team goes to international tournament

4-17-04 -- Two teams which competed at the Eastern Massachusetts State FLL tournament have combined their rosters to represent the state at the FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) Mission Mars International Invitational at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, from April 15th - 17th.  The Pilvines/Mende team and the Levensohn/Gawle team flew to Atlanta as Sharon Eagle Robotics A #0183.  Forty-eight teams from the US and Canada, as well as the Austria, Denmark, South Korea and the UK, competed and celebrated the end of a great robotics season. At the same time, hundreds of FIRST Robotics (FRC) high school teams competed in their own tournament.

The first day was taken up with practice sessions and meetings with the technical, research and teamwork judges. The group challenge, in conjunction with Alliances of 4 teams each, was announced and begun.  In the evening, the teams adjourned to the Atlanta SciTrek museum for a special party, with Dean Kamen, the founder of FIRST, as the guest of honor. The Brown Suggah Vanilla ice cream was awesome.

The second day started with a parade and opening ceremonies. The focus of the day was the core competition at the robotics tables, for the individual teams and Alliance mission. At the end of the day, we were able to meet with a LEGO representative to share ideas. Then we headed for Coke World, dinner at Underground Atlanta, and then the fantastic pool at the hotel.

The final morning was the award ceremonies. Afterward, we toured the FRC pit areas, took a CNN tour (we saw coverage of the tournament while we were viewing the newsroom), and broke up to go our separate ways.

A fantastic time was had by all, and everyone hopes to have the opportunity again!
