Youth ChallengeBoston Sunday Globe - Globe South, page 2 - Sunday, September 12th, 200409-12-04 -- About 35 youths in Sharon have signed up to figure out how to help people with disabilities - on a small scale. The robotics enthusiasts are age 9 - 14, and the building blocks are LEGOs. The members of the Sharon Youth Robotics Association, beginning its fifth season, will be making moving robots out of LEGO blocks as part of a national competition. This year's theme is "No Limits," featuring designs that could help people with disabilities, said John Pilvines, a group organizer. "You don't have to teach kids much about making things with LEGOs," he said. "We do get the kids organized and help them form teams." Pilvines said the youngsters learn to write simple computer codes, and use motors, sensors, and gears to make the small-scale robots complete a series of tasks as part of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League competitions. "You don't have to be a technologist to be involved in this," Pilvines said. New members can attend the group's next meeting at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Sharon Public Library.
