Robotics on the Rise

The Boston Globe South, Community Briefing, Sharon - Sunday, December 12th

Young robot enthusiasts from Sharon found a way to help people with disabilities and win recognition at the same time. Last weekend, Sharon Eagle Robotics Unlimited, one of seven teams in the Sharon Youth Robotics Association, won an award for research into an idea it developed to help a Lasell College student with cystic fibrosis. Unlimited lost in the robot competition to North Andover at the Eastern Massachusetts First LEGO League State Tournament, said coach John Pilvines. Another Sharon association team, the Chimps, won the top rookie award. On Nov. 20, Unlimited placed first at the Blackstone Valley Regional High School First LEGO League Competition in Upton. The Unlimited team ended up eliminating a fellow Sharon group, the AngelBots, ''which was kind of awkward," Pilvines said. But any tension was short-lived, he said. ''The AngelBots and Unlimited partnered last year to take a combined team to an international competition in Atlanta, so we're pretty good friends," Pilvines said. Plus, the all-girls group did take the Team Support Award at the regional competition. The AngelBots expect to compete Saturday in the Massachusetts State Tournament in Worcester, Pilvines said. Roughly three dozen Sharon youths ages 9 to 14 belong to the robotics association. -- Maria Cramer
