Sharon Success at Central Massachusetts State Tournament

After qualifying to represent the Sharon Youth Robotics Association (SYRA) in an internal competition, the Sharon Eagle Robotics AngelBots, CoCoColas and Eaglettes had a fantastic time at the Central Massachusetts FLL State tournament (RoboNautica 4) held at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday, December 18th.  The AngelBots are an all-girl team and the most experienced group in the SYRA.  Both the CoCoColas and the Eaglettes (also an all-girl team) are rookie teams, at their first tournament ever. In the face of very strong competition, the run of five robot performance rounds left each team in well positioned for the playoff rounds.  All three teams did well in the finals and overcame some tough calls on the field, but were stopped short of the final three play-off round.

The RoboNautica tournament was very well organized by Mike Sherman and his crew of volunteers from the WPI community, and went off almost flawlessly, with schedules well met and great facilities.  From the 7:30 am setup to the closing ceremonies, energy was high all day.

Each of the Sharon teams were recognized with an award for their achievements.  The rookie CoCoCola team won a technical award for Design Innovation.  The AngelBots won an Research award for most Creative Presentation.  The rookie Eaglettes won a Judges award for the Most Reliable Robot.  And most representative of the Sharon Youth Robotics Association, the three teams (as a group) won the award for Team Spirit.  You truly had to be there to experience their enthusiasm!

Thanks go to the members of the Sharon Eagle Robotics Unlimited team which were at the tournament to help mentor our rookie teams, and demonstrate their remote control Robotic Sumo, as well as the coaches and parents leading and supporting their team's efforts.

With this tournament signaling the end of the regular Massachusetts FIRST LEGO League season, the teams will anxiously "Wait 'till next year!" and another great FLL Challenge!  If any Sharon students from 9-14 years of age are interested in participating in this competition, see the SYRA web site in late August, at http://syraweb.home.comcast.net/.
